Selecting Hardware
Standalone VR vs PC vs Flatscreen vs Other
Choosing VR hardware to deliver training can be a mind-boggling experience, there are so many different options. This section outlines the main choices and we share our recommendations for providing a good user experience as well as value for money.
PCVR is expensive, not so portable, but high-quality.
- HTC Vive / Vive Pro / VIve Pro
- Oculus Rift / Rift S
Standalone VR is more economical, can deliver a better experience due to lack of cables, easier to setup. This is the future of hardware.
- Oculus Quest (consumer)
- Pico Neo (enterprise)
360 Headsets are outdated. These platforms were never considered fully immersive, and had a short shelf life.
- Oculus Go (no longer supported)
- Google Cardboard (no longer supported)
Flatscreen (non-VR hardware)
- Use BYO devices, and run off the web-browser
There is the option to use VR experiences that run in the webbrowser. This can be used instead of a VR headmounted display, or can be used in conjunction to using VR Headmounted display to assist with scalability.
Our Recommendations: Pico Neo or Oculus Quest
Pico Neo
We are currently looking into Pico Neo, due to their:
- Enterprise friendliness
- Quality of hardware (eg. better hand tracking – good for virtual reflection)
- Better data security / it’s not owned by Facebook
Oculus Quest
Pro’s
- Great Headset, Hardware & Software
- Easy to setup on the day
- High adoption rate. Recognized as best for consumers.
- Priced very competitively
Con’s
- Locked into a Facebook account
- Enterprise is not well supported
- App Store is a pain to navigate
